SDW100 Recce 2
The spring bank holiday in the UK is traditionally the point at which weather turns from bad to worse in preparation for an awful summer – even so, it is always good to take advantage of a long weekend. I had been watching the forecast for some days though, and it had actually been improving and as a result, Liz had very generously asked me if I needed to do another training run down along the South … Read entire article »

SDW100 Recce 1
I am not normally one for doing reconnaissance of routes before races. Merely attending a race with a family of 4 takes up enough time as it is, so to visit an area prior to an event with all the associated children logistics, really doesn’t seem fair. The South Downs is so close to where we live though, that it was too good an opportunity to miss for my race in a few weeks time. My schedule … Read entire article »

The Final Week
As I enter the last week before the first stage of my adventure in the Moroccan desert, the 28th Marathon des Sables 2013, I am pleased, to say the least that I am now over the hump of my training and touch wood, God willing, fingers crossed, etc, etc, I am now pretty much guaranteed to make it to the start line in as good a condition as I can. Last time it was a different … Read entire article »

Now Rest
As I mentioned in my last post, this was a big week. In fact, it was my last big week before leaving for the desert and I had planned it to be my biggest training week, ever. The point with ultras, as with all other athletic training is that there have to be different training approaches for the different types, that is the long, single stage races (like Leadville or the UTMB) in comparison to the more … Read entire article »

Peak Week, Frozen Face and Dawn Run
Life is good. Even though it was sooooo cold on Monday; that hellish combination of cold snap, icy winds and high humidity which reduces the already cold feeling even further, it has been a good week. The cold was a bit worrying after the sub-tropical temperatures we had last week where, incidentally I nearly expired due to the sudden increase when I went out running round the City at midday; clearly I am going to need … Read entire article »
5 Weeks to Go
As you can probably deduce from the title, 5 weeks today, I will be in the desert. I will actually, God willing, have completed the first stage of the Marathon des Sables, and after 5 years of planning, training, successes, injury, setback, deferral and general graft, I will be back in the Moroccan Sahara, certainly older, hopefully wiser, with a bit more ultrarunning experience under my belt. The Marathon des Sables, or MdS as it is frequently … Read entire article »

Yurbuds – Earphone review
I’m certainly trying out a lot of different equipment at the moment in preparation for a year of running, or perhaps it’s just that I haven’t replaced anything for such a long time, that it’s all starting to break at once. Either way, backpacks, torches and earphones, are just some of the items I don’t want to find broken just after I’ve handed my bag back to the organisers in the middle of the Moroccan … Read entire article »

Triple Challenge
Today’s run was my first ‘long’ run since my race a couple of weeks ago. I have been out running in the meantime, but with age (and injury) comes experience and so I am trying to listen to my body a lot more than I might have done in the last, and last weekend it was raining and my body was telling me to stay in a nice warm bed rather than get up at 5:00am … Read entire article »

After the Trot
The Thames Trot took a bit more out of me than I realised and one week on it’s time for a bit of a post-mortem. During the week, I’ve run a few times, but my legs have definitely been tired. When doing the simplest things, such as climbing the stairs at the Waterloo when rushing for the train, getting moving in the morning, etc., I’ve certainly noticed more fatigue in my legs; more difficult to get … Read entire article »

The New Arrival
We had been thinking about getting a dog for some time, but it still seemed like a bit of an ‘impulse purchase’ We finally got ‘Adastra’ on Thursday 7th Feb after Liz had spoken to one of the other mums at school who was also looking for a puppy for the family, and discovered she had a bitch left, from a litter born three months ago, and hence ‘ready to go’. About midday I got an explanation … Read entire article »
